Shirley Cezar Papillion, a beloved wife and mother and a highly regarded former elementary school teacher, died on September 7, 2018 after a courageous battle with breast and stomach cancer. Shirley was born on October 30, 1971 and grew up in the rural Allen Parish community of Soileau. A graduate of Oberlin High School, Louisiana State University, and the University of New Orleans, Shirley was a dedicated and passionate elementary school teacher for nearly 20 years. Shirley taught at public, private, and parochial schools, most notably Lusher Elementary School in New Orleans, Oak Grove Primary School in Prairieville, and The Dunham School in Baton Rouge. Shirley especially loved teaching first graders and was very proud to have taught hundreds of South Louisiana children to read and become life-long learners. She took great pride in her work and was well-known for being one of the first teachers to arrive at school in the morning and one of the last to leave in the evening. She put a tremendous amount of time and effort into planning her lessons and units and in designing and decorating her classrooms. She loved updating and revising her teaching materials and methods and loved identifying ways to help individual students, especially those who struggled, achieve academic success. In 2013, the Dunham School presented Shirley with the prestigious designation of Master Teacher. Shirley enjoyed the love and respect of her students, their parents, her fellow teachers, and the administrators of her schools. Many of her fellow teachers became her close personal friends over the years. Shirley married her husband Darrel in 1991, while they were students, and they were later blessed to have two beautiful children, Jude, a seventeen-year-old senior at Catholic High School, and Anna, a fifteen-year-old sophomore at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. Shirley was a devoted and faithful Catholic who had a lifelong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Shirley was a very independent thinker who was not swayed by the opinions of the crowd or majority. She always formed her own judgment about what was the best course of action and rarely changed course once she had made up her mind. Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Lucius Cezar Jr. Shirley’s memory will be honored and cherished by her husband Darrel J. Papillion, son Jude Francis Papillion, and daughter Anna Claire Papillion of Baton Rouge; mother Marita Cezar; twin sister Bernadean Logan, brothers William Cezar (Kimberly), Fabian Cezar (Yvette), Stephen Cezar (Michelle), and Aaron Cezar; mother-in-law Rita Papillion, and sisters-in-law Amanda (Ty) Larkins and Kimberly (Milton) Charles, as well as a host of in-laws, nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. Visitation will be held at St. George Catholic Church on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. until recitation of a Meditative Rosary at 10:00, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., conducted by the Reverend Michael Schatzle, followed by a private burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dunham School, Catholic High School, the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, St. George School, or the school or , particularly to fund efforts aimed at students who struggle in school. Shirley’s family would like to thank the many skilled doctors and nurses who provided her with excellent care during her illness and to the many friends who offered prayers, love, and support to Shirley and her family during her illness.
