Marigene Elizabeth Smith Lane passed away Saturday December 1, 2018 at the age of 94. She was born in Port Saint Joe, Florida on April 3, 1924 to her parents Jessie and Verna Smith. Marigene and John were married on December 21, 1946 before moving to Baton Rouge in 1951 after John graduated from Purdue University. They joined the First Methodist Church and the Wedding Ring Sunday School Class, where they made lifelong friends. She was a charter member of Broadmoor Methodist when services were held in a tent and she hosted Sunday School Class in her home, while the church was under construction. She was a very social person, belonging to two dance clubs and three bridge clubs at one time. She was a member of the LA Mouse Garden Club, The Volunteers of America Auxiliary, and the Baton Rouge Woman’s Club. She loved shopping for antiques, refinishing her treasures, and enjoyed decorating her homes. She gladly joined John on numerous moves, both foreign and domestic, during their marriage; they had seventeen homes all over the country. One her most endearing traits were her love of children, her own as well as all that she encountered. She never passed up an opportunity to stop and visit with all babies. Her career as a mother, wife, and grandmother was outstanding and she will be missed daily. Her one job outside the home lasted three hours, when she was employed by a Georgia Tech Professor, who got a little fresh. Her culinary skills spoiled everyone that she fed and her decorating taste was exquisite. She is survived by her husband John, their daughter Beth (Robert) Whitlock, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and two former Daughters in Laws Cherly Lane and Christine Lane. She is preceded by her two sons Robert Andrew Lane and John Brent Lane, and her parents Jessie and Verna Smith. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Tuesday December 4, 2018 at St James Place, 333 Lee Dr, at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make donations in Marigene’s name to the of Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Hospice, or the of Baton Rouge.
