Gary Scott Briggs passed away at the Carpenter House on September 14, 2018 after a short battle with esophageal cancer.  He was 66 years of age.  Gary was raised in Gretna, Louisiana, graduated from West Jefferson High School, and attended LSU.  He joined the United States Army in 1971, honorably served our Country in the Vietnam War, and spent years in Germany as a correspondent to the General.  For his service, Gary was awarded the Good Conduct Medal twice; the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star; the Vietnam Campaign Medal Expert Badge; and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.  After his honorable discharge from the United States Army, Gary spent many years in culinary management, education, and training.  Gary was a philosopher at heart.  He was a voracious reader and was comfortable discussing any topic of interest.  Gary took a keen interest in mentoring friends and family and was always available to listen and offer words of encouragement.  His counsel will be sorely missed by his many cherished friends and family.  Gary is survived by his beloved daughter, Valerie Briggs Bargas (Trey), his three grandchildren (Briggs, Anna-Marie, and Reed Bargas), his mother, Marcelle Jadius Briggs, his sister, Jacalyn Briggs Ramsey (Richard), his nephews, Colonel Scott Philip Nolan (Jennifer) and Robert Roy Nolan (Michelle).   Gary was predeceased by his father, LRoy F. Briggs, and his son, Adam Lloyd Briggs.  A memorial service celebrating Gary will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street, Baton Rouge.  Visitation with family from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.  The family is forever grateful for the support and care of the PACE staff and the staff of St. Joseph Hospice Carpenter House.  In lieu of flowers, the family would request that donations be sent to the St. Joseph Hospice Carpenter House.
