John Childs passed away March 10, 2018. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan August 11,1919. He worked for Ford Motor Company before being drafted in 1942 and trained under General George S. Patton in the 10th Armored based at Ft. Benning, Ga. He was given an honorable discharge as a Sergeant in 1945. He enrolled in Vanderbilt University and earned a BS and MA degree in Education and taught school in Nashville, Tenn. A recruiter from Equitable Life of NY hired him to teach insurance seminars throughout the United States. During his 28 years with Equitable he wrote and edited training manuals and retired as Director of Professional Development. He spearheaded a drive for inmates in New Jersey State Prison to put books on their empty library shelves. After retiring from Equitable he moved to Baton Rouge. He served as Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Mercy Church and was active in taking Communion to hospital patients. He enjoyed reading and tutoring children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reed N. Childs and Louise Seelbach Childs, and step-daughter, Carol Timmons Miller. He is survived by his wife Jean and family. John was an only child and when John and Jean married he became part of a ready-made family. Jean is the youngest of six children and had three girls Michelle Cournoyer Parsons, Jeanne Cournoyer Pickett, and Carol Timmons Miller. At that time there were four grandchildren. The family has grown to nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. When Jean’s daughter, Carol, died John and Jean raised her three children, Rachel, Angela and John Miller as their own. He was dearly loved by his wife and the family he thought of as his own. Thanks to our neighbors and friends for their caring and prayers, and to Audubon Hospice for their care and services. Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette, on Thursday, March 15, 2018, from 9am until Mass at 10:30am. Burial will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd. There will be a Reception in the parish hall at Our Lady of Mercy Church following burial. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in John’s memory to a charity of your choice.
